NCCB has instituted three major annual awards to acknowledge and honor crafts persons across the country. The first is the Master Crafts Persons Award which is given to four master artisans, selected through a national competitive process and named after famous artists and folklorists, Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin, Patua Quamrul Hasan, tapestry artist Rashid Chowdhury and scholar Tofail Ahmed. The second is the Master Crafts Person Lifetime Award given every year to honor a master crafts person for excellence in craftsmanship and contribution to advancing the skills of the younger generation. The third one is the Young Crafts Persons Competition which awards four young artisans in recognition of their skill and to encourage them to continue in their inherited profession.
Some of the most recent and notable projects of NCCB has been the Capacity Building of Terracotta Artisans at Paharpur World Heritage Site in 2017, which included an exhibition and fair in Dhaka as well as one at Paharpur. Both were very successful. This project was undertaken in collaboration with UNESCO.
Jamdani, a book on Jamdani weaving tradition has been published in February. It is a revised edition of the book Traditional Jamdani motifs published in 2018.
In 2019 National Crafts Council of Bangladesh (NCCB) organised a month-long Jamdani festival in Dhaka. During that Festival Sonargaon was awarded the honour of the World Crafts City by the World Crafts Council (WCC).
In 2024 another Jamdani Festival was organized with the sponsorship of the Sheva Nari o Shishu Kalyan Kendra. Later a book `Jamdani Design’ was also published as a part of this project.
The mission of the association is to preserve and revitalize the folk art and crafts of Bangladesh by empowering artisans—especially women and marginalized communities—through skill development, innovation, and market integration. We are committed to fostering eco-friendly and sustainable production practices that respect both the environment and tradition. By connecting crafts with the tourism industry, we aim to create new opportunities for cultural exchange and economic growth. The association serves as a bridge between artisans and the world, providing them with the tools, training, and platforms necessary to thrive, while promoting gender equity, environmental consciousness, and heritage-based tourism.
Our vision is to build a vibrant, inclusive, and globally respected ecosystem for Bangladeshi folk crafts where women artisans are at the forefront of leadership and innovation. We envision a future where traditional crafts are not only preserved but also transformed into sustainable, eco-conscious products that appeal to both domestic and international audiences. By linking crafts to the tourism economy, we seek to turn every handmade object into a cultural story that invites global appreciation. The association aims to be a transformative force—where craft, sustainability, gender equality, and cultural tourism intersect to shape a resilient and proud Bangladesh.
